"Radiation Safety Practices in Laser Plasma Accelerator Research at the BELLA Center"
Abstract:
The Berkeley Lab Laser Accelerator (BELLA) Center addresses various scientific needs by utilizing some of the world’s fastest and most powerful lasers to drive laser-plasma acceleration (LPA). As a part of the accelerator facilities within the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), the BELLA Center complies with radiation safety principles and respective DOE and LBNL regulations. This talk will be focused on various radiation safety practices within the BELLA Center, pointing out some specific characteristics of laser-plasma accelerators. The simulation tools used to evaluate radiation hazards and the application of these tools in planning experimental activities will be presented. The implementation of the Integrated Safety Management (ISM) within different practices at the BELLA Center will be discussed.

We often collaborate with local chapters of related professional societies such as the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA-NCS), the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM), and the American Nuclear Society (ANS NorCal).
