IPAC12 in New Orleans May 20-25, 2012
Lorraine Marceau-Day, day@lsu.edu
The European, Asian and American Particle Accelerator Conferences have merged into the International Particle Accelerator Conference. The last “European” Conference will be held in San Sebastian next September. Thereafter, all the conferences will be under IPAC. The conference will rotate from the Americas to Europe and Asia. IPAC12 will be held in New Orleans Louisiana nest May 20-25 in New Orleans, Louisiana. Over 365 abstracts have already been received. Our Accelerator groups should not miss this event as it will not again come to the “Americas” for 3 years. The Americas includes both North and South America. Thus, the likelihood of it returning to our continental shores in the next 6 years is probably minimal. Members of the CAMD staff make up the local arrangements committee and are busy trying to work out all the logistics. It promises to be a superb conference. My specific duties include the student program [so if any one has any ideas about sponsorship, please contact me at day@lsu.edu ] as well as the women in engineering and science program. The US appears to be lagging far behind our international counterparts. For the past two conferences, the United States sent only 9 students to either conference while the Asian sector sent 60 and the Europeans 70 students. We cannot hope to remain at the forefront of accelerator development if we fail to train sufficient numbers of students for the next generation of physicists and accelerator physicists.
