From the President-Elect
Michael P. Grissom (mpg1@coastside.net)
As noted by Linnea in her “From the President” item above, members of the Section contributed to a full Accelerator Special Session at the 55th Annual Meeting of the HPS in Salt Lake City, Utah. I encourage all Section members to recommend that their colleagues join the Accelerator Section. I firmly believe that all University, Military and Medical RSOs (at the least) should be members of the RSO, Medical and Accelerator Sections of the HPS. I also recommend that the Associate members who did not renew after the Oakland 2008 Midyear be contacted by those of you who know who they are regarding rejoining the HPS. Further, my congratulations to all Section members who received awards at the meeting.
Though it may seem strange, we are already in a position to call for papers for an Accelerator Session at the upcoming HPS Midyear meeting on Radiation Measurements in Charleston, South Carolina, to be held February 6- 9, 2011. If you are interested in presenting a paper that relates to the measurement of radiation at accelerator facilities, please contact Sam Baker, Section Director, at: sambaker@anl.gov and let him know. If we have sufficient interest for a ˝ day session, we will let the Program Committee for the Midyear meeting know that the Accelerator Section will be providing a session on as timely a basis as possible.
The new Accelerator Section Board of Directors will have been set by the time you receive this newsletter. I encourage all of you to send suggestions for a topical Accelerator Special Session at the 56th Annual Meeting of the HPS at Palm Beach, Florida on June 26-30, 2011 to our new President-Elect. I also encourage you to nominate colleagues for 2011 Awards, a category in which we were quite successful during 2010. As a reminder, we have a listing of past Officers of the Section on the web. It is hoped that members will be able to use this as a tool in deciding whether or not to nominate a colleague for a Section post in the 2011 elections.
It was great to see so many of you in Salt Lake City and I hope to see many of you again in Charleston. My thanks as well to the immediate past Board Members, who came off the Board the last week in June, for their service to the Section. At least we still have Linnea as a Director on the HPS Board, for which we should all give thanks.
