HPS IRPA-12 DELEGATE NOMINATIONS
Robin Hill, Chair, CCHPS Nominating Committee

The May 2008 Health Physics News announced that the Health Physics Society (HPS) will be sending 29 delegates to the General Assembly meeting that is held in conjunction with the 12th International Congress of the International Radiation Protection Association.  At this time 10 individuals have been appointed by the HPS Board of Directors.  The CCHPS is fortunate in having 3 representatives appointed:  Darrell Fisher, Kathy Pryor, and Dan Strom.

The HPS Board of Directors is looking for individuals interested in being considered for one of the remaining 19 delegate positions.  If you are interested, there are two different routes you may take towards this goal.

The first route is to go through Chapter nomination.  Each Chapter may nominate one member of the Chapter as a candidate for selection without having to go through the process of getting sponsors.  If you are interested, please send a message to CCHPS President, Wayne Glines (Wayne_M_Glines@rl.gov), or Robin Hill, Chair, CCHPS Nominating Committee (Robin_L_Hill@rl.gov) at your earliest convenience.  The deadline for submission by the Chapter is July 7, 2008.  IRPA Delegation Application Form.

At the May 29th Business Meeting the CCHPS voted to provide $1,000 in financial support for an additional CCHPS nominee selected to be a delegate.

The other route is to obtain sponsorship from 20 or more voting members of the HPS.  The nomination form is attached and can be found at https://hps.org/membersonly/documents/irpa12_delegate_form.pdf.  The subscribers shall (1) indicate that the nominee has agreed to accept the post of delegate if appointed, (2) indicate, to the extent known, the degree of financial support that the nominee will require should his/her candidacy be successful, and (3) provide a biographical sketch which describes in detail the nominee’s qualifications for the post of delegate.

The form and its supplemental material must be received by the Executive Secretary (Richard Burk, HPS, 1313 Dolley Madison Blvd, Suite 402, McLean, VA 22101; rburk@burkinc.com) by no later than July 7, 2008 or be handed in at the Pittsburgh Annual Meeting Business Meeting (July 13-17, 2008).  If you are pursuing this option, it would be greatly appreciated if you would also contact Wayne Glines or Robin Hill.

March 2008, Speaker: Dale Boyce

IsoRay Medical™ was founded in Richland, Washington in 1998 to develop, manufacture and market isotopes for use in the medical treatment of various malignant diseases. Company founders included recognized experts in the medical isotope field, including Lane A. Bray, who developed the patented process for economically separating and purifying Cesium-131.  Cesium-131 was first used in October of 2004 at the University of Washington Medical Center for the treatment of prostate, breast, liver, brain, head and neck cancers and other malignant disease.

January 2008, Speaker: Antone L. Brooks, Professor Washington State University Tri-Cities
"Cellular and Molecular Effects of Low Dose Radiation "

This presentation discussed the recent cell/molecular data and provided an up to date review of the biological research conducted in the low dose region (below 0.10 Gy or 10 rads).  Also discussed how these data can be used to understand the scientific basis for current radiation standards. Finally, the presentation discussed the public perception that low doses of radiation represent a serious health risk. This perception is central to the generation of the observed radio-phobia.

(Professional Enrichment Program Lecture)  The Professional Enrichment course ran two hours and is eligible for 4 Continuing Education Credits.

November 2007 presented by Ron Kathren

"Depleted Uranium---More than you want to know, but what every health physicist should know."
