Portland Oregon with Mt Hood

Traveling in Washington

Washington has the I-5 freeway running north up from Portland to the Canadian Border. The Speed Limits are 60 miles per hour near larger metropolitan areas and 70 mph in less congested areas. The I-90 freeway starts in Seattle, and if followed to its completion, ends in Boston Mass. It travels through a mountain pass about an hour east of Seattle, which doubles as a ski area in the winter. Moving into Eastern Washington, you can go south on I-82 to Yakima and Richland/Tri-cities or continue on I-90 to Spokane and points east.

In the Puget Sound is one of the biggest and most active ferry systems in the world. While used for transport, a trip on a ferry itself can be a tourist activity, with scenic beauty and wonderful sky line views of the local cities.

All roads are open in the summer, though some mountain passes are closed in the winter due to snow.
